Program information

Beacon Hill Elementary creates a welcoming environment that encourages each child to develop to their fullest potential.  We are committed to creating an atmosphere of inclusion and respect.  We strive to foster curiosity while developing effective work habits, critical thinking and social and emotional wellness.  By creating strong partnerships with parents and other community members, we provide opportunities for students to link classroom experiences to the world outside.  Our goal is to prepare respectful, bilingual and open-minded students who will become lifelong learners. 

Beacon Hill follows an Immersion program.

K4 – Courses are taught in English. Students receive 3 x 30 minutes of specialist time (Drama, Music, Phys. Ed)

K5 – Courses are taught in French with the exception of Music, Drama and Phys. Ed. Students receive 3 x 30 minutes of specialist time (Drama, Music, Phys. Ed)

Cycle 1 – Courses are taught in French with the exception of Music, Drama, and Phys Ed.

Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 – 50% French and 50 % English.  Music, Drama and Phys. Ed in English.

Cycle 1, 2 and 3 have 135 minutes of Phys. Ed, 90 minutes of Music (Grade 6 Band program) and 45 minutes of Drama on a weekly basis.

Physical Education

Class Time

 The physical education program at Beacon Hill focuses on a wide range of individual and group/team activities. Individual activities include cross-country running, The Canada Fitness Program, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, while team activities include volleyball, handball, ultimate Frisbee, curling, soccer, tchoukball and basketball. We have a strong outdoor physical education program where students have one physical education class per week outside. Students need to be properly dressed for outdoors as they participate in many different games and through until June. activities from September right From Kindergarten all the way to Grade 6 students learn about respect, fairness, sportsmanship, teamwork and responsibility through cooperative games, individual activities, and team sports.

Track and Field – Grades 4, 5 & 6
Hike and Bike – Grade 5

Intramural Pilo Polo League

 Pilo Polo is played during lunchtime throughout the year. Students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 are eligible to participate in the League and Grade 6 students are eligible to referee, score keep, and time keep the games. Pilo Polo is like playing indoor broomball or hockey with 2 nerf balls and giant nerf polo sticks. 94% of the students get involved as it’s an easy game to learn and play, not to mention it’s a whole lot of FUN! The first season starts in September and finishes in December with the “Finals” played in front of the entire school! The second season starts in January and ends at the end of April.

Music

At Beacon Hill, music is for everyone! The music program at Beacon Hill is geared to nurture and develop students’ appreciation, interpretation and understanding of music at every grade level through various means: • singing, playing, listening and performing • various instruments • music reading and writing • history and technology • cooperation and teamwork • optional extracurricular ensembles for cycles 2 and 3 to USIC & DRAMA PROGRAM The music program at Beacon Hill is geared to nurture and develop students’ appreciation, interpretation and understanding of music at every optional extracurricular ensembles for cycles 2 and 3.

Drama

Drama is for everyone too! Drama teaches students to open their minds and to think more deeply about the world around them. Through drama students develop a stronger understanding of the power of their voice and body language through character work. learn about psychology by studying characters to understand what events and experiences have shaped a character into the person that they are, helping us to understand why people make the choices that they do. design, costumes, props, lighting/sound design, directing, writing, acting and more! Most importantly drama naturally builds confidence in individuals. Students learn to be proud of who they are and what they have to say. Through drama students learn to embrace what makes them unique and to celebrate o differences.
